Chesapeake bans body paint at Grassfield High School games

CHESAPEAKE – Students show school spirit in many ways -- cheering, yelling and generally whooping it up at games.
Some at Grassfield High School went so far as to paint themselves at a recent football game, so now that practice is banned.
Officials say they got complaints from parents and other students, so they banned body art, calling it disruptive.
"I am not going to elaborate, but there were things that were not appropriate for a high school football game," said Schools spokesman Tom Cupitt.
Supporters say the ban lessens school spirit.
"I don't really see a problem with it. I mean, it's just a way for them to be able to express their school spirit," said Ashley Hufsteler, a Grassfield senior.
"A lot of students disagree with it because there are other schools that do it," said another student.
Cupitt is all for school pride.
"There are other ways to show school spirit -- wearing the school colors or a T-shirt, painting your face, but again what was happening here was really going over the top," he stressed.
There is no district-wide ban, but officials say other schools can make the same decision if they feel body painting goes too far.
