Going green is in fashion

06:28 AM EDT on Thursday, October 4, 2007

There’s a movement in the world of fashion to go green.

We've all heard of organic cotton, even hemp, but clothing is now made out of soy, corn and even bamboo.

Hemp has been around for decades and is part of the eco-fashion world. At Half Moon, an Oceanfront souvenir shop, you’ll find it in sandals, belts, bags and wallets.

Anne Romano, the retail manager at Wild River Outfitters in Virginia Beach, says the company’s been green for years.

"In the outdoor industry, eco-fashion is almost passé. It's been going on since the 90s," she notes.

“This is a very strong (hemp) shirt. This is a shirt you can beat up, travel, wash over and over and over again,” says Romano.

Her store carries lines including Patagonia, NorthFace, Prana and Mission Playground – all companies that use sustainable fibers and materials to make clothing.

Organic cotton is bi, but the materials and technologies are evolving.  Several companies have come out with bamboo fibers.

“We all know how fast bamboo re-supplies itself. It's totally sustainable," Romano notes.

In recent years, eco-fashions have shown up on the runway as haute couture takes a hint from the "going green" movement.

Designer Tadashi Shoji’s 2008 spring collection is nature inspired and a few of his pieces include hand-woven bamboo bustiers.

While sustainable resources are at the heart of the movement, so is recycling what's already out there.

Recycled fleece is made from plastic bottles. “This is made from pcr - post-consumer recyclable fabric. And it's soft. You can't feel that this might have been a hard bottle a long time ago,” stresses Romano.

She says they're just as soft and often more durable than what we're used to.

You pay more for many organic, biodegradable and recycled fabrics, but you’re paying yourself back by helping Mother Earth.

“It's all about protecting our planet for future generations," Romano says.
