Go online to get Portsmouth Humane Society a million-dollar makeover

PORTSMOUTH – 51 cats taken from a Churchland home are now at three shelters in Hampton Roads. Most of them are at the Portsmouth Humane Society, which is badly in need of a makeover.

You can help make that happen without contributing a dime. It will take your vote.

Last year, the Website Zootoo did a nationwide campaign and awarded a million dollar makeover to a shelter.

Portsmouth is hoping to win this year.

"I think anybody that's been here knows that we're very deserving of the makeover. We've made a lot of changes recently.  Our animals are well cared for and we care about our animals greatly," said Executive Director Tereza Marks.

Right now, there are some 80 dogs and 130 felines being cared for at the shelter.

Right now, Portsmouth Humane Society is ranked fourth out of 1,000 shelters vying for the top spot.

"We’re getting votes from people notifying their friends, their family members, posting it on their MySpace page or Facebook page.  We have it posted on our Website page," Marks notes.

“If they do anything else, like post a picture of themselves or a picture of their animal or talk about their dog Fluffy likes to do, whatever, then we get more points from those postings, too," she stresses.

The judges visit the top 20 shelters.

Then, based on the top three, people vote again and that contest decides the winner.

Marks would love your vote and so would the animals.
