VIRGINIA BEACH – Wouldn’t it be great to get paid for surfing the net?
"We're seeing women embrace blogging in a way that is absolutely revolutionary," says Lisa Stone, who helped develop an online company offering women a way to make money online.
“For women to be able to help support the family, particularly in an economy like this economy, is enormously satisfying for so many of our bloggers,” she says.
The San Francisco-based blog, Blog Her, boasts 8-million readers.
For stay-at-home mom Carmen Staicer, blogging has brought unexpected popularity. The Virginia Beach mother of six is the smile behind “ Mom to the Screaming Masses.Mom to the Screaming Masses.”
“I genuinely like to write and let people know that it's not all puppies and daisies and lollipops, that raising kids is really, really hard work,” she says, explaining the focus of her blog.
Her blog attracts 1,500 readers a day and national advertisers.
That has translated into extra cash in Carmen’s pocketbook.
“Bloggers in our network make between $25 a month, which is the minimum that we pay, to thousands of dollars a month, depending on how popular they are,” says Stone. “We rotate national level advertising and we pay depending on the reach of the blogger.”
“| don't make enough to pay my mortgage. I make enough to pay a couple of bills,” Staicer says.
She began blogging after her fourth child was born. It was an outlet for her feelings and a place to debunk motherhood myths.
“It is a lot of work. I drink a lot of coffee and I don't sleep too much,” she admits.
The big paydays don’t come right away, but they do come.
“So, someone just starting out who doesn't have that many readers would make $25 dollars, perhaps $50. Someone who is an enormous success like Carmen can make hundreds or even thousands,” Stone says.
Carmen says the money helps, but she blogs to help others survive the trials and tribulations of motherhood.
“I feel like it's helped me to realize who I am, that I'm not just this person who picks up the wet towels and the stinky socks all day long,” she explains.
