Hampton veterans hospital warns of infections from injections
05:45 PM EDT on Friday, September 5, 2008
HAMPTON – The Hampton Veterans Medical Center says nine patients seen during the week of August 25-29 in the orthopedic clinic have evidence of infection that may have resulted from procedural injections given in the clinic.
The injections were given to relieve discomfort, officials said.
Experts from the Hampton VA and Veterans Health Administration are investigating the exact cause of the infections.
The nine were hospitalized; however, four have since been discharged, officials told WVEC.com.
All patients who received injections during the time frame in question were contacted and alerted of possible symptoms and provided contact information for any additional questions.
“The health and safety of our veterans are of paramount importance” says Wanda Mims, Medical Center Director. “We regret the distress that our veterans may be experiencing as a result of this isolated incident.” “We will provide any necessary tests and follow up to those patients affected. Hampton VA Medical Center is thoroughly reviewing the cause and effect of this situation and is taking various precautions to address the matter.”
