06:03 PM EDT on Wednesday, September 5, 2007

A Suffolk pastor tells 13News that the woman found dead in Chesapeake on Tuesday was an active member of his church.

Clarence Russell, pastor of Union Baptist Church, says 21-year-old Maya Davis lived in Portsmouth with her family and was very active member in the church, especially with the youth outreach program.

Wednesday afternoon, Chesapeake Police confirmed the identification.

Russell says he is counseling Davis' parents.

He says Davis did not return home Monday night after work.

“It was very shocking the way she passed,” said Russell. “Nobody would've imagined. Anyone who knew her would never imagined that this would've happened to her.”

Pastor Russell says she earned the trust of church elders and befriended many of the members who are now in mourning.

“She touched a lot of young people and old people in the short duration of her life,” Russell said.

Davis lived with her family in the Hunters Point section of Portsmouth. Her pastor says her second home was his church.

“Short life, but she impacted a lot of people and she was such a sweet girl,” said Russell. “As a pastor, I feel like I lost one of my children because she was so sweet.”

A jogger found her body on Rotunda Avenue around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Police are investigating the death as a homicide.
