The Navy is at Hurricane Condition 3 for all Hampton Roads installations.

Ships are prepared to get underway if conditions warrant, but so far, they're staying tied up at their piers.

Navy officials say vessels can better weather a storm of hurricane magnitude when they are underway. A greater potential for damage exists to the ship and pier when its moored.

Additionally, having these ships underway ensures they are ready to respond to any national tasking, if required.

Facilities are securing all potential hazards, removing debris from drainage areas and sandbagging low-lying area.

Hurricane Conditions of Readiness:

Condition Five:  destructive winds are possible within 96 hours

Condition Four:  destructive winds are possible within 72 hours

Condition Three:  destructive winds are possible within 48 hours

Condition Two:  destructive winds are possible within 24 hours

Condition One:  destructive winds are possible within 12 hours
