PORTSMOUTH – No city could be prouder of a native son than Portsmouth is of LaShawn Merritt.

The Wilson High School graduate won 2 Olympic golds in Beijing – for the 400 meters and the 4x400 meter relay.

The city sent him off in a big way and planned to throw a bash to welcome him home, but the September 5 celebration has been cancelled.

An e-mail from the city stated that the 22-year-old regrets he can't attend.

The celebration was to include a parade and special presentations by the city and the school system.

The event may be rescheduled, officials say, but nothing has been set.
