The same jury convicted Shawn Sir Charles Ward and Julian Barksdale of second-degree murder instead of first- degree murder, the original charge.

20 of those 78 years are for the murder of Nyasia Tillmon, who was hit as her grandmother held her during the November 2007 home invasion.

Defense attorney David Hargett wasn't surprised at the recommendation.

"We understand the jury's verdict and certainly with the number of charges, the sentencing is not that big of a surprise," he said after court.

Defense attorneys say they're planning appeals.

Ward's and Barksdale's families didn't understand and left the courtroom in anger and didn't comment.

The victims' families weren't in court Friday.

Judge Randy Smith will decide how much of that sentence the men serve during a hearing Dec. 16.
