Va. Beach SPCA to care for 100 dogs from alleged puppy mill

VIRGINIA BEACH – About 100 dogs seized in a raid of a suspected puppy mill in West Virginia will be transferred to the Virginia Beach SPCA.

Members of the SPCA will leave at midnight for Parkersburg, WVA and return Thursday night with the dogs.

The animals will get medical and behavior assessments and services to determine how much socialization they need before they can be adopted, officials said in a release.

The Humane Society of Parkersburg has been granted custody of all 927 dogs removed over the weekend from Whispering Oaks Kennel.

Most are dachshunds, but many Yorkies, King Charles Cavaliers and Poodles were there.

The Humane Society said nearly 100 dogs were transported Tuesday to The Humane Society of Missouri.

The remaining dogs will be sent to organizations elsewhere in the next few days.

Authorities say the dogs were in relatively good health and that the kennel's owner has agreed never to operate a dog-breeding business again.

Va. Beach SPCA officials say they’ll need experienced animal handlers and foster families to help the dogs since some of them have had little to no human contact.

They also say caring for the dogs will be expensive and are asking for donations to help cover the cost of veterinary care.
