Virginia enjoying time in political spotlight

NORFOLK -- Virginians are enjoying time in the political spotlight as Democrats and Republicans work for the state's 13 electoral votes.

On Tuesday night, U.S. Senate candidate Mark Warner will give the keynote at the Democratic convention. He said in an e-mail ahead of the address, "I'm looking forward to Tuesday night and sharing how we managed to work across party lines in order to deliver results."

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-7th D.) is in Denver to give the Republican response to Warner's address.

Wednesday night, Marine wife Beth Robinson of Chesapeake will be one of the "everyday Americans" explaining why she supports Sen. Barack Obama.

On Thursday, Gov. Tim Kaine is among the speakers for the final night of the convention and before Sen. Obama accepts the party's nomination for president. Of course, Kaine was on Obama's short list of possible running mates.

Meantime, the GOP announced Tuesday that Rep. Thelma Drake (R-2nd D) will speak on September 1, the first night of the Republican convention in Minnesota.

In an e-mail, Drake told WVEC.com, “I am proud to be able to speak at the Republican Convention. John McCain has the experience America needs. He is a proven leader who will find common sense solutions to keep taxes low, expand health care coverage and reduce costs, lower energy prices and make America more energy independent."

Virginia is considered a "red" state, not having gone democratic for president since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964.
