04:48 PM EDT on Friday, August 15, 2008

Reported by: Wayne Carter

VIRGINIA BEACH --  A counterfeit check ring is targeting one grocery store chain and getting away with thousands of dollars of cash.

The arrest of a man using fake checks at the Harris Teeter store in Norfolk may be the break they need to break the ring in Va. Beach.

In early July, suspects walk into the Harris Teeter at the Oceanfront and cashed a check for about $500.

Since that time, phony checks have turned up at Harris Teeter on Va. Beach Blvd., Plaza Trail and the new Ferrell Parkway store.

They got as much as $4,000 from each store.

Police say they may be cashing fake checks at other businesses, but they only know about Harris Teeter cases so far.

41-year-old Joe Whitehead is charged with cashing a fake check at Gateway Bank in Ghent in Norfolk.

Police say he’s a suspect in the Harris Teeter investigation.
