Portsmouth track star runs for Olympic Gold

LaShawn Merritt will be running for Olympic gold.

PORTSMOUTH – Track star LaShawn Merritt is ready for his run for the gold at the Olympic games in Beijing.

On Friday evening, the city’s throwing a party as he leaves for China to compete in the 400-meter run.

You can join in the sendoff at the Cavalier Manor Rec Center at 404 Viking Street.  The celebration begins at 5:00 p.m.

Merritt graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 2004 and spent one year at East Carolina University before signing an endorsement contract with Nike.

He’s currently enrolled at Old Dominion University.

Merritt won a silver medal at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics in Osaka, Japan.
