Hampton won't use roller rink after "N" word investigation
03:20 PM EDT on Friday, July 25, 2008
HAMPTON - The City of Hampton is no longer using a roller skating rink after investigating the reported use of the "N" word by an employee there.
In a statement Friday from Dianne Randall Foster, Special Assistant to the City Manager, "the City will not be utilizing the Plaza Roller Rink for recreational program activites."
Rhonda Johnson says she was caught completely off guard when her eight-year old son Jahbari told her what happened on July 23 at the Buckroe rink. He told her an employee behind the counter called him the "N" word as he tried to buy something.
She says Jahbari told a counselor, who filled out a report and tried to talk with the manager. The manager and owner refused to talk.
City of Hampton’s response:
"The City of Hampton Parks and Recreation Department has completed its review of allegations that a staff member of the Plaza Roller Rink used racial epithets toward our program participants on July 23 during a city-sponsored field trip to the rink.
“Because of the nature of these allegations, please be advised that the City will not be utilizing the Plaza Roller Rink for recreational program activities.”
