Year-round workouts help teen athletes get fit

VIRGINIA BEACH – A group of high school athletes believes getting fit requires staying in shape all year long.
“We actually have athletes who think they are in top shape and we get them in here and they have a little bit more growing to do," says Coach Deborah Sweede at Velocity Sports.
The principle at Velocity Sports is movement, injury prevention and flexibility.
The athletes work out two or three times a week, in season or out, whether they play basketball, baseball, soccer or run track.
Senior Kirsten Velazquez plays softball for Princess Anne High School.
"It keeps me in shape and it's kind of addictive for me. I love staying in shape and being ready and prepared for games and stuff," she says.
“I think it's very good for athletes to get ahead of their game and build our body up and get ready for the college level," adds Mandy Ryan, who attends Virginia Wesleyan College.
“People need to know how to cut. They are doing to need to know how to be explosive, change directions, run at maximum speed, so we focus on the movement and that can play across the board in any sport,” notes Sweede.
Packages at Velocity range from $15.00 to $20.00 a session.
