NEWPORT NEWS – With no more curbside parking, many people drive around and around the airport rather than park and pay to wait.

So, Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport set up a free place to wait – a cell phone parking lot.

Signs direct drivers to the waiting area.

"They can sit down in the cell phone lot and wait for a phone call that their arriving passenger's ready to be picked-up, shoot up to the curb, grab them and be on their way," explains Jessica Wharton, an airport spokeswoman.

Cliff Creek, who pulled over close to the entrance to pick up his grandson, says, "That's a great idea to put in an area where they can receive a phone call and just run up and pick 'em up at the curb."

Airport officials say the lot was designed for people like Mr. Creek and they hope it also will reduce congestion at the terminal entrance,

There is one big rule to follow. You have to stay with your vehicle at all times. Security officers patrol the lot day and night.

The lot opened July 16 and is located in the Jamestown parking lot.
