Bond denied to woman charged with trying to abduct newborn

A pregnant woman charged with abduction charges after allegedly trying to take a two-day-old baby from the hospital was denied bond Friday.
According to our partners at The Virginian Pilot, the judge cited concerns about other children's safety and said that Shameka Pittman must remain in jail until her trial.
Norfolk Police say Pittman, 21, posed as a nurse and tried to walk out of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with the little boy on July 20th.
Authorities say she didn't get far because staff noticed the child was missing.
Vice President of Medical Affairs, Dr. Gene Burke says all 16,000 employees go through several hours of security training.
"If they see something that isn't right, even if they can't put their finger on it, they're trained to raise the issue of anxiety, to call in their managers, their security," said Burke.
The baby, who is not related to the woman, was recovered unharmed.
Her family says Pittman was studying to become a licensed vocational nurse and that she was due to have her baby three weeks ago.
"I didn't know whether she had had the baby or lost the baby and neither did her mother or father," said Vernon Davis, Pittman's grandfather.
Her father, Vernon Mason, attended Monday's hearing. He said his daughter has been on Ritalin.
“I don’t know what to say about it right now. I need to talk with her some more,” said Mason. “She ain’t been right in her mind for a while."
Mr. Mason also said he'd like a chance to apologize to the family of the infant. He also says he'd like his daughter to undergo mental evaluation, saying she needs to get help.
Pittman, who lives in the 50 block of Mary Peake Blvd. in Hampton, is charged with abduction.
Pittman remains in the Norfolk City Jail without bond.
She's has a preliminary hearing set for August 27. An attorney from the public defender's office was appointed to represent her.
