Amid protests, Karl Rove stumps for Rep. Drake

05:30 PM EDT on Friday, July 18, 2008

VIRGINIA BEACH – He’s called the architect of the George Bush presidency.

Karl Rove was in Hampton Roads Friday at a fundraising luncheon for Rep. Thelma Drake (R-2nd District).

Outside, about two dozen protestors shouted “Arrest Karl Rove.”

Inside, Drake supporters paid $1000 for lunch and a photo with the conservative.

"I think the people of the 2nd District overwhelmingly like Karl Rove,” Rep. Drake said.

Outside, the protestors staged a mock trial, judging Rove “guilty” on a long list of gripes.

“We find this to be a criminally corrupt administration that has broken all the laws of God and man,” stated Joseph Filipowski.

Rove, smiling as he left, took it all in stride.

“I'm a controversial figure, but James Carville is controversial figure; Paul Begala is a controversial figure. That's just the way politics is,” he said.

Rove may face contempt charges for not testifying before Congress. He says the decision not to testify is the president’s decision to make, not his.
