05:39 PM EDT on Tuesday, June 23, 2009
HAMPTON -- Save our beach is the battle cry of the Buckroe Beach Bayfront Committee.
Members are running out of time to collect 4,500 signatures to save the last city-owned bayfront properties at Buckroe Beach from development.
They want to reverse the zoning, planned sale and residential development of 7.81 acres near the Chesapeake Bay.
The petitions must be filed by July 10 and the group is stepping up efforts to collect signatures from registered Hampton voters.
On Tuesday, volunteers gathered signatures from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at New Garden Buffet in Riverdale Shopping Center on Mercury Blvd., next to the post office. Then, Tuesday night, a signature drive was set for Spare Times Bowling Alley at 1907 N. Armistead Avenue near Mercury Blvd., according to the Save Buckroe Website.
The deadline for the petitions is July 1.
