Buy a book, help Portsmouth libraries

PORTSMOUTH -- You’ll find more than just books at this weekend’s Friends of the Portsmouth Public Library book sale.
"You name it, we pretty much have it," says Jeanne Larcombe, president of the Friends
About 19,000 donated books, tapes, DVDs, even greeting cards, will be for sale to benefit the library.
Volunteer Stormy Thorson picked up a lot of them. Last year, he put about 900 miles on his truck picking up donations, but he doesn’t mind.
"It's a totally volunteer organization and we average about $1,000 a month on our book sales," Larcombe states.
With budget cuts, every dollar is appreciated.
"They use it for things the city does not fund. A good portion of it is used for the summer reading program for the children. They use it sometimes to buy a piece of equipment or furniture that the city is not going to pay for," Larcombe explains.
DVDs, CDs and books on tape are $2.00; books are sold by the inch, so pile them up and measure your savings.
It’s $1.25 an inch for hard backs and 75 cents an inch for paperbacks.
The sale, which is Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for the public, is at the Main Library at 601 Court Street.
Sales are held each month.
