Exmore mayor killed in Eastern Shore crash

EXMORE -- The mayor of Exmore, Virginia died after being injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday.
The accident happened around 1:20 p.m. on Route 13, at the Cape Charles traffic light.
According to State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Cotten, 49-year-old Jeter Guy Lawson ran a red light and struck a Toyota pickup truck. Lawson also a 29-year veteran of the Norfolk Fire Department.
Lawson was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he died.
James Weiner and Ralph Orzo, the Toyota driver and passenger, respectively, were also flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Cotten said that Lawson was not wearing a seat belt.
Maryann Fitchett worked with Lawson when he was fire chief in Exmore. She still works for county EMS.
"Guy loved this community, no matter what it was, whether it was the town, the fire company, even the outskirts of the town," she said. "He didn't drop the ball on you."
