It is with deep sadness that we tell you our trusted friend and colleague, Ed Hughes of WTKR Television, has died.

Ed passed away Tuesday afternoon following his battle with colon cancer. He was 66.

He was diagnosed in November, 2002 and had undergone chemotherapy treatments.

His name is synonymous with local news in Hampton Roads. Ed spent more than 30 years in radio and television. In 1967, he began his career as the morning radio newsperson for Paul Hennings at WTAR radio. He got into television at WTAR-TV (now WTKR-TV Newschannel 3) as a distinguised reporter then anchorman. He won numerous Virginia Associated Press awards.

Before his media days, Hughes pulled a four year stint in the Navy as a fleet radio operator. So, it was fitting that the veteran newsman covered the military beat.

He was born in Portland, Maine. Ed is survived by seven children and five grandchildren.
