NEWPORT NEWS – A woman driving a car that crashed on I-64 last year, killing her young daughter and nephew, was sentenced Friday to three and a half years in prison.

Shameeka Martin was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the June 2007 crash.

Martin was speeding on the off-ramp near Jefferson Avenue, ran off the road, and flipped the car, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash threw four children from the car. Her two-month-old daughter Daraje Brown and eight-year-old nephew Tazia Gibbs died at the scene.

Martin, her 13-year-old brother, Danta Gee, and her 20-month-old daughter, Finya Brown, were injured.

None of the children was restrained or in car seats.
