North Carolina shoppers could pay extra for plastic bags
10:44 PM EDT on Friday, May 8, 2009
A push to go green in North Carolina means customers may have to pay for plastic bags at the grocery store.
North Carolina lawmakers are considering a proposal to add a 10-20 cent tax on each plastic bag used in Dare, Currituck, and Hyde counties. Senator Marc Basnight said the extra fee would be an incentive for people to switch to reusable bags.
“The effort is not much, and I would be hopeful we’d tell the world we really care,” said Basnight. He said right now bags are polluting the environment in the Outer Banks.
Some customers said they wouldn’t mind paying for plastic.
“Whatever’s better for the country, world in the long run,” said Gary Davis. “I got small kids to think about and I want to leave something for them.”
Others said adding this tax during a recession is ridiculous.
“Right now the economy is bad and I don’t think we should get any more taxes,” said Fatima Perez.
Shirley Winder added, “Too many people are suffering now as it is, and I think more taxes on them won’t do any good.”
North Carolina lawmakers are expected to discuss the proposal Monday.
