Duke of Edinburgh visits Norfolk
07:11 PM EDT on Friday, May 4, 2007
Prince Philip arrived at Nauticus under tight security and immediately received a Hampton Roads welcome from Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim.
He stopped to see the silver Mace, a symbol of royal authority presented to the city in the 1600's, and then he walked a short distance to the Armed Forces memorial where he met with local military families including Christie Roush, who's husband is in the Air Force.
"I don't know how to describe it. It's mind boggling. It's a chance of a lifetime,” said Roush.
Stephanie Torres, whose husband is in the Navy, exchanged a laugh with the Prince.
"It's exceptional,” she remarked.
Inside Nauticus, dancers with the Birmingham Ballet who are there for the Virginia Arts Festival, gave a preview to the Duke. Then he headed next door to Battleship Wisconsin where he met with British families who now call Hampton Roads home.
Being on a Naval ship is nothing new to the Prince, he was a Naval officer, so he enjoyed touring the ship and chatting with the British officers who were on the Wisconsin for his visit.
The lucky Hampton Roads residents, both British and American, who had the chance to be there say meeting Prince Philip wasn't quite what they expected. They say he was very personable and friendly.
