Hampton Roads malls beating trend of vacant stores

NORFOLK – Many shopping malls are feeling the pinch as consumers stop spending money.
The New York real estate analysis company REIS reports that store vacancy rates across the country are at a 10-year high.
Many stores are going out of business, leaving malls and shopping centers with vacant space for rent.
In Hampton Roads, several malls are looking to fill vacant storefronts, but analysts say the region’s doing better than other areas of the country.
A researcher from Old Dominion University says the military community helps insulate businesses from the sting of recession; the general manager of MacArthur Center in Norfolk is pleased with occupancy rates -- right now at 95%.
