Police hold annual DUI conference to combat drunk driving
05:39 PM EDT on Wednesday, March 19, 2008
VIRGINIA BEACH -- The Virginia Beach Police Department held its annual DUI conference at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, speaking with other departments and Mothers Against Drunk Driving about new ways to combat drunk driving.
Hundreds of officers from around the country packed the Convention Center, looking for the newest techniques in DUI enforcement, studying new laws, techniques and tests.
Officer Jeff Manago was ordered to drink at the conference until his blood alcohol level was around twice the legal limit. A doctor then used his big pupils to show officers what to look for to make certain the people they pull over are really drunk.
“If the eyes move, bounce, jerk in a way that is, there’s a good reason to arrest the driver of suspicion of drunk driving,” said optometry professor Karl Citek.
The program is not only celebrated by officers, but also by those in the community. Bob Walsh, of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, lost his stepdaughter to a drunk driver more than four years ago.
“It’s very personal as to what we can do to help avoid another family to go through what we had to go through,” he said.
He, and others, want to make sure police have all the tools they need to keep our roads safe.
