Good Samaritan rescues man who jumped from bridge
10:46 AM EST on Saturday, March 18, 2006
Charlie Hatfield, 13News Police were called after a man jumped off the Campostella Bridge.
A man saw someone jump off a Norfolk bridge Friday afternoon and he went in after him.
The rescuer, Angel Arauz, said he was driving across the Campostella Bridge when he saw a bunch of cars stopped on it.
One of those cars was left by its driver who police say jumped into the Elizabeth River Friday afternoon.
Arauz saw the man jump and drove his car underneath the bridge. He went into the water, grabbed him, and swam to shore with him. Arauz stayed there until emergency crews arrived.
"He actually went in the water and dragged the guy out and then took off," said Norfolk Police spokesman Chris Amos. "He's a true Good Samaritan."
The victim was in critical condition at the hospital, but he was expected to survive, Amos added.
Police don't know what caused the man to jump.
“I don't feel like a hero or anything like that,” Arauz said. “But I guess anyone who had gotten there before me would have done the same thing, you know."
Arauz said other than some cuts to his feet, he is OK.
