Rep. Drake deplored by condition of Walter Reed
07:19 PM EST on Tuesday, March 6, 2007
Virginia Congresswoman Thelma Drake finds the conditions at Walter Reed deplorable. Monday night, a Congressional delegation, including Drake, toured Walter Reed.
Though the Army cleaned the facility before the delegation’s arrival, the cosmetic improvements were not enough for Drake, who says systematic change must come.
“They need care, they need it now and we need to do everything that it takes to ensure they get that care," said Drake.
Drake, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, says the committee has been working closely with various Veterans Administration centers across the country.
”We've done things like call the V-A. We've had people told it would be 3 or 4 months before they could get in for an appointment. We were able to speed that up and get them in very quickly," Drake said.
Drake says Veterans Administration centers across the country, including the Hampton V-A Hospital, need scrutiny, too.
Drake's House Armed Services Committee will take up the veteran health care issue on Thursday, and she plans to tour the Hampton V-A next Monday.
