NEWPORT NEWS -- An accident Saturday claimed the life of two high school students
Andrew Davis Mason and Taylor Dorset died around 2:00 a.m. Saturday when Mason's Kia Rio swerved off I-64. Police say the 18-year-old tried to over-correct and lost control of the car, slamming into a tree.
Two passengers survived and were taken to the hospital.
Dorset was her mother's pride and joy. Family members say the 15-year-old had an infectious smile and a vibrant spirit.
"I'm thankful there were no drugs or alcohol. He wasn't even speeding," said Dorset's mother. "It was just her time, I guess. It was just her time."
In her memory, friends erected a memorial at the crash site, a cross in Dorset's favorite color, blue, with flowers and teddy bears.
The Menchville freshman loved cheerleading. Her friends and teammates at Warrior All Stars wore bands this afternoon to remember their friend, lovingly called "Totertotter."
"When the day is done, you can look back and be, like, whether Taylor was in your life for three seconds or a year, she has the same impact," said friend Ashley Pully. "She was just that type of person."
Virginia State Police investigators say Mason was wearing a seat belt and that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
Counselors were at the school Monday to help anyone deal with the loss.
