Bob Greene says dig deeper to find reasons for weight gain

01:34 PM EST on Thursday, February 14, 2008

RESTON -- It’s a month and half into 2008 and many people are finding it hard to stick with their New Year’s Resolution to get fit.

Oprah Winfrey’s personal trainer, Bob Greene, says most people make resolutions for the wrong reason.

For example, instead of deciding to lose weight, he says you need to look at why you gained the weight.

"They want to make weight the problem; therefore, diet is the solution," he notes.

Greene says digging deeper will likely be more successful than diet alone.

"I make the weight a symptom of something else in your life that needs to change.  If you're in a bad relationship, either improve it or move on. If you're in a career that's not satisfying or it's working you into the ground, take a look at that.  Make changes to that career or change."

Greene says the true test of success in weight loss is making a radical change in your life and keeping it for five years.

"I've never seen anyone successful long term that didn't have a difficult choice and that's what it's about."

If you made a New Year’s resolution and you're not seeing success, Greene suggests rethinking it and figure out why you packed on that extra 10, 20 or 30 pounds you want to lose.

"What I do for a living is overcome excuses and I've been doing it 25 years and I've heard them all except a good one."

Oprah Winfrey airs weekdays at 4:00 p.m. on WVEC-TV.
