CHESAPEAKE -- Former President Bill Clinton came to raise support and money for his wife’s presidential campaign, but he first spoke about a fundraising event at the school for a police officer killed in the line of duty.

Many 13News personalities, along with members of the Chesapeake Police Dept. and a group from New York, were participating in a kickball tournament to raise money for the family of Det. Jarrod Shivers.

“I think we should give them all a big hand for their service and to his memory,” Mr. Clinton told the crowd.

After his speech ended, Mr. Clinton went out to the field at Indian River High School to watch a bit of the tournament and to show his support for the effort.

He was presented with a tshirt worn by the players in the tournament.

He talked with many of the participants and audience, including 13News Anchor Lasalle Blanks, who helped organize the event.

He even autographed a kickball that will be auctioned off on eBay starting Tuesday. Proceeds will go to Det. Shivers' family.

The money raised from Saturday's kickball tournamentm about $3,000, will go to the Det. Jarrod Shivers Memorial Fund for his wife and three children.

Officer Shivers was hit as he and other narcotics officers tried to get inside a home on Redstart Avenue to serve a narcotics warrant.

13News found court documents that show police were looking for a marijuana growing operation that night, but they didn't find it.

Shivers, 34, was an eight-year veteran with the Chesapeake Police Department and had been working in the Special Investigations Section (Narcotics) for two-and-a-half years.

If you didn't attend Saturday's kickball event but want to contribute, donations are being collected at any Bank of Hampton Roads for the Officer Shivers Fund or the Officer Down Fund.
