Repairs have been made, so the Navy helicopter that made an emergency landing Wednesday on the Eastern Shore will fly home to Norfolk.

That flight will take place later this morning, Naval Air Force Atlantic spokesman Mike Maus told WVEC.com.

The MH-53 Sea Dragon helicopter from Naval Station Norfolk-based Squadron HM-14 (Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 14, the Vanguard) made a precautionary emergency landing at Cherrystone Family Camping Report.

Towanna Williams works at the campground, and witnessed the landing. She was afraid the helicopter was going to crash.

"I was going on my lunch break, walking towards the car, and I seen it coming towards me and it was getting lower and lower," said Williams. "And then it swooped and turned into the field and landed."

There was an indication of a hydraulic fuel leak, so the air crew made the precautionary landing. They were involved in routine training exercises at the time of the mishap. A maintenance crew is en route to the scene now to fix the helicopter.

The helicopter landed around 12:00 p.m. at the campground, just north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

"Very unusual for this area," said Brenda Lyons, who witnessed the landing. "Very unusual, and it caused a bit of excitement."

The aircraft did not suffer any damage and no one was injured.
