Statue refuses to budge after 55 plus years on Va. Beach Oceanfront

Debate sprung up at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront over whether a famous figure in bronze should stay in its spot at 25th Street and Atlantic Avenue, or be moved.
The Norwegian Lady has stood serenely at its spot since 1962, and commemorates the 1891 wreck of the Norwegian vessel, the Dictator.
Some discussed moving the Norwegian Lady a few blocks south, to the Old Coast Guard station where artifacts from the ship are preserved. However, talk of moving the status even a few blocks has drawn the ire of the Norwegian community.
“A lot of work and effort had gone into keeping the lady here, particularly the past two years when the aviation monument came into being,” said Hal Bernsen, president of the Norwegian Lady Plaza Foundation.
The work he refers to was $50,000 in seating, flowers and storyboards, “to ensure she would have a beautiful location to many years to come.”
Bernsen said when the cost was explained to the Board of Directors at the Old Coast Guard station, any talk of relocating the statue stopped.
"We want to create a better tie," said Bill Gambrell of the Old Coast Guard Station. "We don't necessarily need to move the lady in order to do that, but we want to do something so we were a little more closely connected."
Lifetime Virginia Beach resident Catie Cerex says she couldn’t be happier about keeping the lady facing Va. Beach’s sister city of Moss, Norway, where a duplicate statue stands.
“She looks really good here,” said Cerex. “The monument here is really nice. It ties in with the naval aviation and the Coast Guard.”
Now, there's talk of new signs at the Norwegian Lady, urging tourists and locals alike to learn more about her history down the strip at hte Old Coast Guard Station.
