These are some of the 260 wooden pilings that are being removed from Broad Creek.
Hampton Roads Transit officials contracted to remove 20 old wooden pilings from Broad Creek to build a new concrete bridge. When low tide arrived, crews found 260 pilings, not just 20.
Removing the others will cost HRT an additional $369,200.00.
According to 13News’ partners at the Virginian Pilot, the cost of the 7.4-mile rail line has grown to $288 million from $232.1 million just more than a year ago when construction began.
The Tide’s opening date has been pushed from early 2010 to at least mid-2010.
