Neighborhood's stolen mascot comes home

06:07 PM EST on Wednesday, January 23, 2008

A fiberglass cow stolen from a Newport News lawn made its way home Wednesday.

“Libby” the cow once belonged to Yoder Dairy, and has become an icon in the community. Now, she has been returned to her home on Lucas Creek Road.

“It’s amazing she’s back,” said neighbor Thomas Fisher.

A week and a half ago, someone swiped Libby from Greg Sommers’ lawn, angering people in the community and worrying some preschoolers at a nearby school.

Libby, the cow, came home Wednesday after a week and a half of being missing.

“A mom gestured me over to the van, and I said, ‘What’s going on?’ She said, ‘My daughter has something to tell you.’ She says, ‘Mr. Sommers, I’m praying for you and your cow.’”

Those prayers were answered. Police got a tip the cow was in a home at Concord Lakes Apartment Complex. They rescued the five foot tall, seven foot long cow late Wednesday afternoon, loaded her in a pick-up truck and brought her home.

“She’s a little worse for the wear. She’s apparently had quite a field trip, so we have a few cracks to do and some painting to do,” said Sommers. “But, I’m just very happy that the police department came through for us, and I’m just very grateful.”

We asked Sommers what he would like to see happen to the person or people who took Libby, and he said there does not need to be a stiff punishment. He’s just happy to have Libby home.

Police have questioned two people about the cow-napping, but so far no one has been arrested.
