Police searching for marijuana when Det. Shivers was killed
11:49 AM EST on Tuesday, January 22, 2008
Chesapeake Police were looking for a marijuana growing operation when Det. Jarrod Shivers was shot, according to court documents obtained by 13News.
It's unclear whether officers ever conducted the search for drugs.
Police say Ryan Frederick, 28, shot Shivers as Shivers and other narcotics officers tried to get inside his home at 932 Redstart Avenue.
Det. K. S. Roberts wrote in a search affidavit that a confidential informant told police that Frederick was growing and selling marijuana in a detached garage at the house.
The informant stated "the marijuana was growing in portable shelters with a hydroponic system."
The informant said he also observed "grow lights" and a watering system, according to the affidavit.
The house was searched that Thursday night but not for drugs. Police executed a second warrant hours later in search of materials related to Shivers' death.
Investigators reported finding guns and ammunition, though it's unclear who owns them.
On Tuesday, Frederick asked a judge for more time to get an attorney so his arraignment was delayed until January 30.
