Neighborhood mascot stolen from Newport News front yard

10:47 PM EST on Monday, January 14, 2008

Newport News Police are searching for a fiberglass cow that disappeared this weekend from its home on Lucas Creek Road.

It would cost about $1,300 to replace “Libby” the cow, but she was special, milkable, and had a history. She used to belong to one of the largest dairy farms on the Peninsula.

“She’s just a likable cow,” said owner Greg Sommers.

Watch the report

Sommers thought a friend from church took the cow as a joke, and he passed out missing cow flyers with Libby’s picture and the words, “Have you seen me.” However, he soon realize it was no joke, and reported the theft to police.

“How do you explain to a police officer on the phone that a cow is missing and then you go on to describe the cow and yet try to be taken seriously,” asked Sommers.

Lots of people in the Denbigh community are taking it very seriously, and are upset by the theft.

"Everybody liked the cow in the yard,” said Juanita Norris.

“I think it’s kids, I guess,” said Marylou Shives. “I don't know of anybody else that would do that."

Libby spent most of her time out front as a lawn ornament, but, former the Yoder Dairy cow was also a working lady.

Sommers is the administrator at Warwick River Christian School, where the milkable cow would sometimes be used as an educational tool and for fund raising.

Someone took Libby the cow from her owner's lawn over the weekend.

”I've had some very concerned parent at the school we do have people drive by every morning,” said Sommers. “They mooed at the cow apparently on their drive- by."

The home of the heavy 5 foot tall, 7 foot long neighborhood mascot is a sad sight, now.

“I’m just hoping that the rustlers have a change of heart,” said Sommers.

When asked what would be a good punishment for stealing his cow, Libby's owner says the leaves in his yard need raking, and his fence needs to be repaired.
