Va. Beach SPCA works to reduce carbon 'pawprint'

VIRGINIA BEACH – The Va. Beach SPCA is working to reduce its impact on the environment – minimizing its carbon pawprint, so to speak.
"We obviously believe in recycling because we recycle 5,000 animals every year by finding the new homes, but we are also committed to the notion of a greener world," says Sharon Adams.
Along with advocating the poop pollutes campaign, the SPCA is launching “green” projects.
The neuter scooter now runs on grease, a bio-fuel.
“So when you see the neuter scooter going down the highway, it's gonna smell like a French fry,” she notes.
Adams says the SPCA also is looking for ways to use the waste put out by the animals that are cared for at the Holland Road shelter.
That’s where Tom Griffin of Greener Results Consulting comes in.
"The idea is to figure out where we are, look at the building itself, the operations, see how green we are today, draw a baseline on waste and energy and water usage and really just create some structure so we can set some goals to become greener in the future," he says.
Others involved in the effort are Independent Energy, LLC, Filta Fry, Inc. and the Va. Beach Environmental Management Center.
