Police: Booze theft suspect found drunk near crime scene

Police say they found the suspect in an ABC break-in shortly afterwards, passed out from drinking too much of his take.

Virginia Beach Police say Eric Dewandel broke into Moe’s Southewestern Grill on Lynnhaven Parkway, first.

Owner Todd Tillery for the phone call from police early in the morning that someone broke into his restaurant. Tillery arrived at the restaurant to see a knocked-out window with blood on it.

“Evidently, he tried to come through with a knife and injured himself,” said Tillery. “I guess he figured he didn’t want to go through the trouble of the second pane. He wandered over to the ABC store, and they got the worst of it.”

There, police say Dewandel broke out the store glass and tracked blood throughout the business before grabbing hundreds of dollars worth of alcohol. He reportedly started drinking while cleaning out the store.

“Come to find out, in a back alley they found the suspect crouched by with alcohol he’d stolen from the store,” said Margie Long, spokeswoman for the Va. Beach Police Department.

Police are attempting to determine if he hit other stores that night.
