HAMPTON - Discarded smoking materials sparked fire that burned a family of six out of their home early Monday, investigstors said.

Flames ripped through the single-story home on Old Buckroe Road around 1:30 a.m.

Officials say four adults and two children were inside the home and escaped without injury, thanks to their dog's barking.

The fire started on the front porch and spread to the attic.

Hampton Fire Marshal Anne-Marie Loughran told WVEC.com the damage is extensive - about three-quarters of the roof was burned off and there's considerable heat, smoke and water damage.

To add insult to injury, a man was caught trying to remove items from the burned-out home.

Pritchett, 47, is charged with crossing a police line, breaking and entering with intent to commit larceny and grand larceny.

The family has been told about the break-in.

The Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Red Cross is helping the family with lodging and vouchers for food and clothing.

The chapter also is helping a family of three who were burned out of their home on Spencer Circle Sunday night.
