The Latest: Hampton man arrested in Va. Beach fraud investigation
04:16 PM EDT on Thursday, July 2, 2009
VIRGINIA BEACH – Police say they’ve arrested the man accused of defrauding several businesses.
A Crime Line tip led investigators to Hampton, where they arrested Robert MIchael Walter, 50.
Police say Walter went into restaurants, theaters and a hospital cafeteria -- 18 businesses in total --claiming to have gotten sick from eating food. He told employees that he’d talked to the manager and was told to come in for a refund of the meal and get money for his medical expenses.
Some paid; others did not.
He's gotten more than $400, according to police.
Immediately after police released video of the suspect, they received several tips that helped in the investigation, according to MPO Adam Bernstein.
According to a search warrant filed in Hampton, where Walter lived with his girlfriend, police located a vehicle that matches the one used by the suspect in the fraud.
At his arraignment Thursday afternoon, Walter’s attorney said police have the wrong man.
The judge granted Walter a $2,000 bond with a requirement for drug testing after Walter admitted to smoking marijuana.
The judge said the bond would be revoked if any substance in his body.
He faces 11 misdemeanor charges.
Walter is due in court September 1.
