Teen killed by off-duty deputy was on house arrest
06:31 PM EDT on Wednesday, October 25, 2006
The teenager killed Monday night in a confrontation with an off-duty Portsmouth Sheriff’s deputy was supposed to be on house arrest in Chesapeake.
Records indicate 15-year-old Eric Corbett had a violent criminal past.
Instead, Corbett had a gun at Victory Crossing Shopping Center and tried to carjack the deputy, authorities said.
"Eric wasn't supposed to leave the house. My daughter notified Chesapeake that he left and they said he would be back because it was cold, but Eric did not come back," said his grandmother, Altheia Downing.

Eric Corbett was on house arrest when he was killed Monday night.
She had the monitoring system that went off Monday after he left.
Police are investigating the gun they say Corbett used that night, which had been stolen from a home in Cavalier Manor earlier in the day.
"We're fairly sure that the gun used was the gun taken. Wether he actually took it or not, it's not know at this juncture," said Commonwealth’s Attorney Earle Mobley.
Mobley confirmed that two weapons, including the deputy’s gun, were taken from the scene.
Only the deputy’s gun was fired.
Corbett was hit four times, according to an autopsy report.
The agency that monitored Corbett’s house arrest device wouldn’t confirm whether it tried to track the teen after the alarm sounded.
Mobley, meantime, confirmed there was a second suspect at the carjacking scene, but the person has not been charged.
