UPDATE 10/2:  Officials say 18-year-old Jade Alexis Mellenkamp died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Wednesday evening from injuries sustained in the fire.  The Mellenkamp family has made arrangements for organ donation.

This loss marks the sixth fire-related death in Virginia Beach in 2013.

A fund has been set up to help the family.

VIRGINIA BEACH-A woman and two teenagers were hurt when fire swept through their home in Va. Beach.

Crews arrived on Millbrook Court around 1:40 a.m. and saw flames coming from the single-family home.

A 15-year-old boy and the mother had escaped and were out the house when we arrived and firefighters found a girl on the second floor and got her out through a window on the back of the house, Battalion Chief Mike Barakey told WVEC.com.

The 18-year-old was initially taken to Sentara Princess Anne and then transferred to Sentara Norfolk General, where she is in critical condition with significant burns and smoke inhalation.

Investigators are working to determine how the fire started.

Barakey said one dog died in the fire and another dog was rescued.

Authorities said the house didn't have working smoke detectors. People living in Va. Beach can get a free smoke detector through the “Operation Smoke Detector” program. Just call the fire station near you or call the “Operation Smoke Detector Hotline” at 757-471-5826.
