NORFOLK -- Police blocked off part of a Norfolk street when a water main broke, causing concerns that the road would cave in. Part of the road buckled.

It happened around 5:15 a.m. Friday on Sturgis Street at E. Bayview Blvd. in the Ocean View section.

Police blocked the intersection and the area around the break because the street flooded.

Officials said 28 residents were affected with low water pressure when the 12" line broke and they had to cut service to those people while repairs were being made.

East Bayview Ave. was re-opened to traffic.

Paula Skinner Hafner was alerted to the problem by information we posted on the WVEC13 Facebook page.

"That explains why we have no water pressure," she wrote.

Beverly H.S. Grimmett, who says she's lived in Norfolk for 37 years, said, "When I flushed the toilet and it didn't fill up normal, I checked the tap, and water came out. Then saw this on the news! Glad to know the reason, I was able to get a shower and leave for work."

Public Utilities crews were on the scene around 7:30 a.m. and officials said they didn't know how long it would take to get things back to normal for the 24 homes on Sturgis and the 4 homes on East Bayview.
