10:10 a.m. UPDATE: The Hampton Fire Marshal's Office says the fire was an accident caused by careless cooking.

HAMPTON -- Two people escaped a fire that swept through their home in Hampton early Wednesday.

Firefighters say flames were pouring from the front of the house on Rendon Drive when they arrived around 1:45 a.m.

Lt. Charlie Kempton with the Hampton Fire Department says the couple may have had to escape through a window.

"The woman was taken to the hospital as a precaution," Kempton said. "The man did not need medical treatment."

Kevin Bowman, who lives a few doors down, says he talked to the man and he told him they were both okay.

It took firefighters about an hour to get the flames under control and damage to the home is extensive.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause.

It's not known if the home had working smoke detectors.
