VIRGINIA BEACH -- Military chefs will begin serving a Thanksgiving meal to more than 250 service members and their families at the Lighthouse Dining Café Facility on board Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story Tuesday.
The soldier chefs cooked traditional Thanksgiving fare including roasted turkey, baked ham, cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, macaroni-n-cheese, green beans, sweet potatoes, rice pilaf, cranberry sauce, rolls and assorted pies.
Soldiers also created ice sculptures and works of food art to display with the buffet. Preparations for the feast begin the night before.
The Thanksgiving meal will be served Thursday, Nov. 22, from 12 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The cost for the meal is $7.60. For enlisted service members E-4 and below and their families, the meal is $6.40.
Senior Fort Eustis military leaders will be serving the meal.
