NORFOLK--Military commissaries all around the world and in Hampton Roads will soon be closed on Mondays as a result of sequestration-related furloughs, according to the Defense Commissary Agency.

The once-a-week shutdowns will be for up to 11 days between July 8 and September 30.

At the Naval Station Norfolk Commissary Friday, the news was greeted with a sense of resignation from shoppers.

“I like commissaries, they have a really good selection for the good prices,” said Don Owens. “It’s going to be a little bit of an impact, but you know, we’re going to get through. There’s plenty of other grocery stores for the small items we need.”

In all, this affects 247 stores worldwide, with more than 16,000 employees.

The furloughs will impact all of the Defense Commissary Agency’s 14,000 U.S. civilian employees.
