CAPE HATTERAS, NC--  NC 12 south of Oregon Inlet is once again open to 4x4s only after closing for several days due to high water/overwash north of Mirlo Beach.

The road  from Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe was already down to one lane and only passable for 4x4's due to Hurricane Sandy.

Escorts by the sheriff's office were suspended when the water rose, but they will start at dark, around 5:00 p.m. and continue until 10:00 p.m., when the road closes until 5:00 a.m. the next day, confirmed Captain W. Charles Nieman with the Dare Co. Sheriff's Office.

Drivers can use the Stumpy Point to Rodanthe ferry and extra ferries have been added to the Swan Quarter-Ocracoke route. Click here for information on ferry routes.
