NAGS HEAD, NC - Fire swept through a multi-purpose building of a Nags Head, NC church Wednesday night.
Firefighters were called to the Family Life Center at the Ark International Church around 8:20 p.m. and battled smoke and flames throughout the night and into Thursday mid-morning.
By 10:00 a.m., the fire was still smoldering and W. Villa Dunes Drive was to be closed until about noon. An alternate route is through the open gate on Nags Head Woods Rd., officials posted on the town's Facebook page.
The church itself wasn't damaged.
No one was hurt.
According to the Outer Banks Voice, around midnight, fire crews decided against using a backhoe to punch a hole in one of the walls of the metal building to get more water inside.
The Family Life Center is home to a gym, kitchen, meeting space and upstairs classrooms.
Crews from Colington, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Lower Currituck, Roanoke Island and the Dare County Fire Marshal and Dare County Emergency Medical Services were on scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
